BAby prescribed Neocate
Hello My baby of 5 1/2 months has a milk allergy and has been prescribed Neocate. Hes breastfeeding at the moment and I have gone into a restrictive diet. But as I'll start working in two months I wanted to start him on formula. I mixed 1/3 of neocate and 2/3 of breast milk but baby will have none of it. In fact he cries each time that you aproach him with the mixture. Hes a good eater, and likes rice, pear, apple, carrot, which I have given so far. Never a cry or a moan. I tasted the stuff, and it really tastes vile. I tried 100% Neocate and omg what a taste!. Breastmilk is so sweet and Neocate soo bitter. Anybody has experience the same? I really feel bad about giving him something that tastes so bad.
Any help will be appreciated.

Noceate taste
Hi, I would try brown sugar, my 5/12 month old was on pepti junior and this was worst than neocate, I asked for help on another forum and they all said brown sugar to get them hooked then wean them off, it only took 3 bottles with nealy 1 teaspoon in and he's fine on it now, he has slient reflux due i think to cows milk allergy and now we are fining more and more things he is allergic to, trail and error, I have just started all over again with his food. Good luck and hope your baby takes it, it is amazing the difference in him.

Like your baby, my son refused to eat Neocate for a long time. After trying every trick in the book, I gave up. About two months later, when he was about 7 months old, I tried again and he gulped down a whole bottle without a blink.

Meanwhile, I suggest that you try mixing Neocate with solids. I mixed it with boiled apples and pears, both fruits he enjoys a lot; it worked wonderfully. Another method that worked was to boil rice flour with water and add Neocate once the mixture is cooled. He also likes bread so I sometimes put bread crumps into the mixture.

Neocate
My son was in Childrens Hospital at 2 months old for 10 days. We got tired of hearing the same old story, "Its just Reflux". We tried 6 diffrent Formulas, and he cried 20 hours a day, seriously. I couldnt take it anymore, and neither could he. So finally they admitted Him into Childrens Hospital, Detroit. At first they put a Probe down His nose for 24 hours to see if it was Reflux. That came back NEGATIVE, and they wanted to send Me back Home with Him on Prilosec!! I said absolutly NOT! Until you find out why Hes in pain and crying, I WILL NOT LEAVE! So then they did another test. They put Him to sleep, and put a Scope down his throat and BINGO! Stomach Ulcers all over from Formula. Had I gone Home, Hed still be very miserable today. So then they put Him on Neocate. He would not eat it for nothing! They said if I didnt get 22 Ounces in Him within 2 days, they were sending Him Home on a feeding tube until He got used to it. I tried and tried, nothing. Finally, I let Him get really hungry, I know sounds mean, but it worked. He was so hungry, I let Him go for about 7 hours without eating(in the Hospital, so they Oked this) and after the 7 Hours, gave Him the Neocate and he sucked down 6 ounces . He was only 2 months old. It still took a while to get Him use to it at Home, but I just kept pushing and letting Him get hungrier, and now He loves it!
Hes 6 months old Today. He still doesnt sleep at night, but there has been a major change! I no longer give Him Prilosec or Reglan either, the side affects were bad and he cried more with the meds. Now He just got 2 Teeth, so Hes teething, the crying hasnt stopped, LOL, but Hes so much a happier Baby.
WIC does give us 9 cans, but Hes going threw 12. So it really sucks, at 34.00 a can, but He needs it. And YES, the thick spit up happens often and the smell is not that bad, I think Similac Alimentum was worse.
Im really glad I found this, No one else has ever heard of Neocate. It was very hard to Order at first, no Pharmacy understood or heard of it and the Hospital only sent Me Home with 2 days supply. Its been a nightmare, but things are getting better! [:)]
