Rice Milk option
Just wondering if anyone knows when you can give a baby rice or soy milk ? my little boy is coming up to 12 months and does not like drinking his neocate at all (lucky if we can get 100mls into him at a time), thinking that rice milk may be an alternative.
Just wondering if anyone can tell me if you can give a 12 month old baby rice or soy milk, my little boy is coming up to 1 and does not like his neocate at all, just thought it might be an option to give him rice milk as an alternative.

rice milk
hi, my daughter also has milk allergy, i started her on rice milk right before she turned 1yr. she seems to like it very much. i tried soy first and she hated it. it took a few tries at first to get her to drink the rice milk, but now she loves it. it is not bad for her at all, the only thing is you have to make sure you get the enriched kind, i believe it has all the vitamins, etc that reg milk has, the only problem is that there is absolutely no fat in it at all, so she isn't gaining the weight her doctor wants her to. the doc wants me to start her on neocate, but i can't afford it. she doesn't eat well, so it is hard to get her to gain weight. i can't believe how hard it is to find foods for her that don't have some kind of milk protein in it!

Rice Milk/Coconut milk
I have been reading your thread regarding rice milk. I have a 29 month old daughter with a severe milk allergy and a 9 month old daughter with a milk allergy as well. Since she was about a year, we have given our oldest daughter enriched rice milk with full fat organic coconut milk. Coconut milk comes in a can and is basically pure fat. We use about 1/4 cup of coconut milk and then fill her sippy cup with rice milk. It tastes sweet like a non-alcoholic pina colada. The rice milk has all the vitamins and the coconut milk provides the fat. Children can be allergic to coconut, so it is best to either test first or introduce slowly. Our daughter has maintained her growth perfectly on this beverage.

Hi, I have a 2-year-old that is allergic to everything too. He has been on Neocate for about 6 months, and has slowly begun to really like it. We tried rice milk and coconut milk too, and I think it is a great mix, but it has no protein or DHA which is important for brain development in such a young child. As for affording it, who can?! WIC will pay for 3600 grams per month, and I also use a program called Children's Medical Services. I am in MD, but you may be able to find a state program. I hope that this is helpful. Leanna

We found out about my son's milk allergy when he was 6 mo. old. I was nursing at the time and decided to quit due to several other allergies. We tried Neocate for about a month, but it was way too expensive. It was costing us more per week that what we were paying for daycare for him! We then tried soy, from that time he had soy formula. It was a good option for us as it had decent fat content and the DHA/ARA for brain development. At 12 mo. we switched him to soy milk. If you have tried soy and have a hard time getting them to drink it, try the kid fortified very vanilla Silk. It is really yummy! He is now 18 mo. old and still drinks soy milk. He is low on the charts for weight, but is still growing well for height. Soy has worked well for us.

neocate
A law was passed just a few months back that requires medical insurance companies to cover part of the cost of neocate if your Doctor submits a note that it is medically neccesary for your child due to food allergies. Check with your insurance company and see.............I live in illinois where the law was passed so I don't know if it was a state or federal law passed. Hope this helps :-)]

Re: Rice Milk option
My son went from Neocate to a soy formula to soy (which he eventually could not tolerate) to rice milk. He was about 18 months when we started the rice milk. He tolerates it very well, but is very underweight as a result. I would recommend putting some neocate in the rice milk to keep your baby used to the taste and to get some extra calories etc.

Hi. My two year old son is allergic to milk and soy protein. After a year of Neocate my husband and I suggested rice milk to our sons gastroenterologist. She said we could switch him since he became one of them statistics "failure to thrive" from the Neocate. He loves the rice milk and began putting on weight Immediately! They have vanilla and chocolate rice milk!!! Good Luck!

Rice Milk
Hi,

I opted for the rice milk option with my 17 month old son. Unfortunatly to find this also made him violently sick and come out in a severe rash. [:°(]
However to the question that was put forward at the start, I was adviced to introduce the rice milk from 8 months into his foods.
Good luck with the rice milk I hope you have more success with it then I did!
Take Care
