Neocate and stools
We have been on neocate for a month now. My daughter is having very dark green almost black mucousy stools. And the smell is horrible Very strong sulfur smell. She struggles for 30 minutes EVERY time she has a bowel movement. You would expect it to be hard like she is constipated but it is borderline diarrhea everytime.
Anyone else have this problem? Is this a side effect of Neocate?

Neocate Stools
My son also has the same type of stools since he has been on Neocate, and man does it smell HORRIBLE. Our doctor said this is normal. My son struggles to poop and it is sometimes so painful that he screams. He is only going once a day now with the Neocate and we have to give him a stool softener to keep things moving. I'm not sure which is better: blood in his stools or the pain caused by the formula!

My daughter had the same type of stools while on Neocate. We added about 1/2 tablespoon of dark corn syrup for every 4 oz. to her bottle. It really helped her stools. You might have to modify how much corn syrup if too runny of stools. We also had to make sure her teeth were well brushed with the extra sugar. Hope this helps.

This is really helpful. We have been doing 2 oz prune juice without response in my 5 1/2 month old on neocate since 9 weeks old. BM's have been sparse at 1 every 5 days without discomfort, but intake has shot up and now the last 2 weeks she's gone up to 7-8 days and now crying with very large, hard stools. The prune juice isn't cutting it anymore. Will ask my pediatrician about karo syrup. Thanks!

Neocate and Stools
My daughter who going to be 4 months on the 16th of Jan. Has been on Neocate since she was 2 weeks old. She also has acid reflux and is on Prevacid. The Dr. has had me put 1/2 tsp of cereal in each of her bottles since she was 2 weeks old and that has also helped along with the prevacid for her reflux, she started to get constipated. I found this Gripe water called Colic-Ease on line, it is all natural and also helps with her gas that she has. She has about 1-2 BM a day. It seems to work for me. She is allergic to soy, milk and sulfur so far, we will see. My combination seems to work. Good luck to all, just be patient and don't quit trying to find a solution, babies should be happy...

I have decided that Neocate does not smell very nice when you make it and it does not smell very nice at the other end.
My son has been on Neocate for over a year now and I'm sorry to say that it has not got any more pleasent for him (or me).
He has cut down that amount of Neocate that he has in a day so it might get better soon [:)]

Janna was on Neocate and now is on Ele-Care. Since she is over a year old she is on the vanilla flavored one and she likes it better than the unflavored one. The stools don't smell so bad anymore now that she is eating food as well but she can still clear a room.

As for the constipation, the specialist told me to use Milk of Magnesia. Janna likes the cherry flavored one and she gets excited about taking it. I am working on the adjustment again, she should be having two stools a week according to her gastroenteroligist.

Ever since she was born she has cried and strained when she poops. All the doctors told me that a lot of kids do that. Even when her stools are watery, she still cries and strains. I don't get it. My pediatrician told me that her two year old does the same thing and there is nothing wrong with him. She told me that now he will run into a corner and hide when he poops. I guess that I will just have to wait until she can explain the problem to me.

Hello there! My daughter was dx with acid reflux when she was 3 weeks olds. We have switched her formula from Neosure to Alimentum and now Neocate. She seems to be responding well to the Neosure. She is also allergic to cow's milk and I believe soy. My question is what type of rice cereal are using. I recently started her on Earth's Best, as it has no milk or soy, but now she is very constipated and with smelly green stool. I was giving her Gerber rice cereal, but it seemed to be aggrivating her acid reflux . I have noticed a big difference since I switched cereal. The Gerber cereal contains soy. (That is why I believe she also has an allergy to soy) I have tried prune tea. I boil 10 oz of water with 2 pitted prunes and give her 2 oz. (FYI) it has the consistancy of peanut butter. I don't know if that is normal. I just wanted to know if there is another good rice cereal that doesn't contain milk or soy. Thanks, Rose
