Cow Milk Allergy Symptoms Regression in Children
Gastrointestinal symptoms often improve after
3-5 days of taking
amino acid-based formula although some children may take longer. In most children, skin symptoms tend to improve within
two weeks.
If an improvement is not seen within two weeks
do not change your child’s formula without consulting your child’s doctor and/or dietitian first. An
amino acid-based formula has probably been recommended because other infant formulas failed or because AAF was considered the most appropriate formula for your child’s symptoms. Changing to another formula may possibly make symptoms worse.
Well documented studies have shown that
extensively hydrolysed formulas and soy formulas can fail in the treatment of
cow milk allergy and delay
diagnosis, while amino acid-based formula are more reliable in alleviating symptoms of cow milk allergy such as persistent
diarrhea, bloody stools,
vomiting, poor weight gain and failure to thrive.
Use of amino acid-based formula in children with cow milk allergy helps to reach
faster diagnosis (with reduced need to monitor and investigate) and permits a
speedier resolution of symptoms: gastrointestinal symptoms regress in just 3 days; others symptoms - including
cutaneous disorders as
eczema and atopic
dermatitis – relief in 14 days, even in extremely sensitive infants.
Exclusive feeding with amino acid-based formula has also been shown to be the most effective way of treating eosinophilic
esophagitis.
