The More Allergenic Foods


Some foods are more allergenic than others. It means that a baby with a food allergy is likely to react to these foods.
Usually they are not introduced until after a variety of “lower allergenic” foods have been successfully introduced into the diet.

Here are several foods most likely to cause an allergic reaction, especially for a child with a food allergy:

Cereals and grains

  • Breads, breakfast cereals, barley,
  • Wheat and rye flours and products made from these flours eg
  • Biscuits
  • Cakes
  • Pastries
  • Pasta
  • Triticale

Egg and related foods

  • Eggs
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Quiche

Fruit

  • Bananas
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Mandarins
  • Oranges
  • Strawberries & other berries including their flavourings e.g., toppings

Vegetables

  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes

Meat, fish and protein foods

  • Fish and Shellfish
  • All types nutsand seeds and their products (including cashews, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, poppy seed, sunflower seeds, tahini, hummus, nut butter, marzipan peanuts and peanut products
Milk and dairy
  • Cow's milk and all milk products
  • Goat's milk and goat's milk products
  • Lactoacidophilus products
  • Sheep's milk and sheep's milk products
  • Soy, soy milk and soy products

Other

  • Carob
  • Chocolate
  • Gelatin
  • Herbs
  • Honey
  • Jam
  • Jelly
  • Junket
  • Rennet
  • Spices
  • Stock cubes
  • Yeast extracts
Food Colours
  • Artificial: 102, 107, 110, 122-129, 133, 142, 151, 155

  • Sulphites 220-228
    (Sulphites are most likely to cause reaction in asthmatics. Young children with allergies are likely to react to some or all of these foods. Usually they are not introduced until after a variety of “lower allergenic” foods have been successfully introduced into the diet.)
